Montessori Curriculum

At Lancaster Montessori, we have six areas of focus and our environment is prepared with age-appropriate activities that support all of these areas:

Movement

In the Montessori classroom, the children are free to move around at will, learning fine motor skills through practical life activities. Gross motor coordination is developed and encouraged through climbing and other play activities during our daily outdoor time.

Art and Music

Students learn about the skills necessary for art through cutting, gluing, painting, and drawing. They are also introduced to music of all varieties, instrument play, and singing to help them develop an ear for music.

Practical Life and Daily Living Skills

In this area, the students experience real life situations such as grooming, dressing, cleaning and social skills which lead to independence and social refinement.

Sense Awareness

Children live in a world of sensory information. They learn about dimensions, shapes, colors, touch, sound, taste, smell and how to translate that information into language.

Mathematics

Through the manipulation of rods, beads, spindles, cubes and counters, the child not only learns how to count and identify numbers, but also gains an understanding of our number system and its basic operations.

Language Development

Language is developed through observations and sensory training using stories and songs for younger children and then progressively using pictures, labels, and puzzles bearing the names of animals, plants, figures, countries and more throughout the classroom to develop letter
