About Lancaster Montessori
Lancaster Montessori was founded in 1970 as a parent cooperative. Parents who enroll their children in the school are given the option of volunteering 15 hours throughout the year for a reduction in tuition. Volunteers help maintain the building, from weekly cleaning to repairs and improvements. We encourage all parents to take an active role in the education of their child by attending parent education gatherings, various after school events (Mom's Night, Dad's Night, Winterfest, Mother's Tea), and two parent/teacher conferences. It is the goal of our school to create a community of parents, children, and teachers who are dedicated to working together to build a foundation for a lifetime of creative learning.
The Montessori Method
Maria Montessori was the first woman to receive degrees in the fields of engineering and medicine in Italy. She founded the Montessori method of education in 1907. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Today, over a century later, Montessori education flourishes on every continent of the world, spanning ages from birth through adolescence.
The Montessori environment is carefully prepared with the developmentally appropriate materials and activities to encourage children to learn at their own pace and develop to their fullest potential. The children cultivate a natural desire to learn in this environment through freedom of choice and by developing their natural "tools" for learning. This freedom of choice and hands on approach is a fundamental element of the Montessori philosophy and allows children to become motivated and independent learners.
The excitement of discovery and the satisfaction of learning are always present in the Montessori classroom. Children develop a lifelong love of learning.
Knowledge is not acquired by listening to words, but by experiencing one's environment.
